ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The Society was started in the 1960's and is involved in all aspects of natural history. We have a growing membership of approximately 300 members who share a common interest in natural history. Within the group we have many knowledgeable members, only too willing to share their expertise on moths, butterflies, birds, bats, mammals, dragonflies, insects, grasslands, flowers and other aspects of natural history.

Our members are involved in collecting records on birds, mammals and other vertebrates, botany and insects within the Arnside & Silverdale AONB area.

The members are drawn from a large area but the majority live within the Arnside & Silverdale AONB, which extends from the River Kent in the north to the River Keer as its southern border west of the A6.

We run an extensive programme of field trips and Indoor lectures covering a wide range of natural history subjects.

From April to September we have our summer programme with approximately 16 field trips visiting sites within north-west England. Additionally, there is normally a five-day residential trip, which has alternated between locations in the UK, and abroad. Over the last 12 years locations have ranged from north Cumbria to the Isle of Wight, and Arctic Norway to southern Spain.

From October to  March we have our winter programme, normally monthly, with visits to a variety of locations within the north-west of England.

During the last 12 years there have also been three residential birdwatching trips of 3 – 5 days in Dumfries and Galloway.

We also hold a series of monthly indoor lectures on the second Thursday of each month from September to April at the WI & Village Hall in Arnside.  These feature guest speakers covering a large range of natural history topics. Our December meeting is a Jacob's Join and our April meeting is the AGM with updates from our recorders.

New members and visitors are warmly welcomed to both indoor lectures and field trips.

For details of our trips and lectures please see our programme page.
